Lightning wallets sit on a spectrum from "tap once, you're in" custodial apps to "you run a node" power-user tools. The best one for you depends on three answers: do you need self-custody, do you need a Lightning Address, and do you need to accept payments at scale?

The short answer for most people: a creator should pick Alby if they want self-custody plus Nostr tooling, or Wallet of Satoshi if they want the absolute fastest custodial onboarding and aren't US-based. For larger balances, Phoenix is the cleanest pure-mobile self-custodial option. A merchant should skip individual wallets and either run BTCPay Server or use a hosted processor like OpenNode or Speed — see the processors comparison.

FAQ

What's the difference between custodial and non-custodial Lightning wallets? +

A custodial wallet holds the keys to your sats; you trust the provider not to lose, freeze, or restrict your funds. A non-custodial wallet puts the keys in your control — typically on your phone — which means full sovereignty and full responsibility. Custodial is faster to set up. Non-custodial is what most of the Lightning ecosystem ultimately recommends for non-trivial balances.

Do I need a Lightning Address? +

If you want anyone to be able to send you sats by typing something that looks like name@example.com, yes. If you only need to receive specific invoices from buyers, you can get by with BOLT11 invoices and a QR code.

Why do some Lightning wallets charge fees on channel opens? +

Self-custodial Lightning wallets need on-chain liquidity to participate in the network. Wallets like Phoenix and Breez open and manage channels for you and charge a small service fee for that work. Custodial wallets hide this complexity by holding your sats inside their own node.

Are these wallets reviewed? +

Each listing has an editorial draft. Pages flagged as drafts have not yet been hands-on tested. See /methodology for the full review process.
